ooc: I already launch the next chapter as I don't expect what still has to be said in the previous chapter will have much effect here except maybe the mood between the characters

ic:
After the playfull round of verbal fencing Tyranael finally managed to quiet everybody so you can all listen. Even the treesoldier has given up his rustling and an eerie silence falls over the river bank. In the distance you hear water falling and wind through trees. Closer by you hear the river lapping and now and then a tearing sound as a donkey takes a quick snack of grass, without any visible effects!
But nothing is heard that gives any hint of trouble.
Then Tyranael takes the lead again to travel further upstream along the river. Captain Satlin soon asks to keep a bit of distance from the river to make sure the donkey's can't drink and not to risk walking into a bog. It's slightly more difficult to travel in a straight line here with lots of bushes that get in the way but can be passed especially when Tyranael puts her swords to use.
Except for a bramble branch that hooks on to Lepus the plantlife behaves and doesn't seem to move on its own and conspire against you like it seemed to do before. You do notice that life really goes fast here as you start to notice flower buds on plants.

After about an hour with an occasional rill, hardly worth mentioning you encounter the first real brook. The stream is about a meter wide with a clear sandy bottom cut through the humus of the forest. To your right you see it flow into the river. To your left it is a second possible trail of contaminated water that meanders away but not before showing a bend that looks like a typical animal drinking place. Forest floor seamlessly goes over into a sandy beach and crossing seems easy there giving you ample opportunity to continue your present course.
As you look around, the first donkey looks down the edge of the brook to see if it can get to the water, but hasn't found a way yet and doesn't seem ready to jump in yet.

During the entire trek along the stream Tyra keeps her attention at a high level, one of her hands always on a sword. Although the claim of invisible assailants seems rather incredible, she realises that this whole situation is rather incredible. Who knows what might be watching them right now. She keeps absolutely quiet, even should someone say something to her.

When they arrive at the fork in the river, Tyranael is glad that she's able to focus upon something else than constant watchfulness. She looks at the two streams that they can follow and tries to determine which stream runs most straight into the one they've been following. In her mind, this stream would probably be the main stream.
"If this phenomenon is artificial, I would think that it might be fed from a side stream, so I think we should follow that one."

"Could be but it could also something in the soil that trickles into the ground water and so into the dozens of streams like this one that feed the river. If the problem is upstream that could mean we can safely get some fresh water here, but I have no idea how to determine that."

PS: I seem to have been unclear, the 2 streams are the brook in front of you and the river you were following to your right.

"You make an excellent point," she conceded, "if only we had a way to detect the magic in the water."
She turned to Vladimir and regarded him for a moment.
"Faeries are supposed to be rather magical. Don't you have a way to detect anything foreign in the water? If we are to investigate this for any amount of time, we're going to need a dependable source of water."

Lepus sighs like a man carrying all the weight of the world on his shoulders. "Don't tell anyone I can do this." He mutters to the others as he steps towards the water. With the air of a man about to do something he really doesn't want to, Lepus rolls back the hems of his voluminous clothes. As he does so, several packages of strangely colored sand fall out and land in his hand. Without explaining what he's doing, Lepus starts to shake the sand out of one packet after another, forming a complicated pattern on the floor around him that looks like a pentagram after an extensive makeover. With that done the cunicul clears his throat and strikes a dramatic wide armed pose, looking at the sky. "Great Kyralanta, in your goodness please show me what magic lies on this place without filling all my books with gibberish or turning my fur ink blue again....please."

Till suddenly the ground falls away under Lepus to form a glass bowl with the points of his pentagram on the rim and the sand embedded as colourful lines.

As you suddenly drop a bit the land around you lights up in various colours of orange to bright red. The bright reds are around you in the lower parts of the valey and are so strong it almost seem to block out other things, but when looking good you have the idea it grows still a bit stronger upstream. And when you shield yourself a bit with your hands from the brightness around you you see orange through the trees around you that seems to be on the mountain sides. What you can see of the river itself seems a bit more orange as well.
When you are ready looking around to see what lights up in what colour and let that effect fall away you know a second thing, you have to look into the water to see something more.

ooc: let me know if you want to walk around to look at more or specific things before dropping the effect.

As Lepus walks to the brook everybody notices the change.
In the water are small black blue particles that give the brook a blueish tint. But when you look further where it flows into the river it looks very clean and transparent compared to the darkness of the river.

When the casting is done his eye's widen at the sight of the colour in (ooc 'in', not 'of') the water
"What did you do! did your magic now totally ruin the water by staining it with ink or what?"
It's clear he doesn't trust the magic and his comparison to ink is far stretched as the water isn't blue itself but seems to carry very dark blue dust particles.

"I must say, I didn't think he had it in him. That's an interesting way to call the magic though."

She watches the result on the water closely and is actually reasonably enchanted at the effects the magic appears to have on it. She looks at Satlin annoyedly when he speaks.
"I would not think that the water can be made any worse, considering what it did before, don't you agree Captain? As you can clearly see, the dark particles in the river must indicate the magic that has been affecting the water. And considering the brook has few of these particles, probably caused by the magic flowing slightly into it from the river, we now know more clearly where the magic comes from. Furthermore, we know that the water from the brook should be relatively safe to drink, especially if we follow it for a moment and drink further upstream. Well then, we have a direction to go to and a safe water supply. Thank you very much Lepus."

As Lepus' sleeves fall back a puff of colourful dust springs out of them partially hiding him from sight.

When walking along the brook upstream you come to the sandy beach on the bend you saw when arriving at the brook. The water seems to be just as speckled with the blueblack particals as were you were before, a few seem to be washed ashore marking a 'floodline' on the beach. Reaching it is a lot easier here though.
Across the water you see a similar eroded side, but on one place it has collapsed making it easy to get up there would you wish to cross.
Along your own side of the brook seems to be something tracklike leaving the beach streamup.

When Tyranael looks back to see if if Satlin follows she sees he does, but takes his guarding the rear now a bit further away. staying ten meters behind you, and when arriving at the beach, he stays at the edge of the forest.

At Vladimirs words Meinozsé freezes and stares palely at her hand she still holds like a bowl containing the sand and a slightly disturbed line of the suspicious particles.

Slowly her other hand slides out of her bags and then she very carefully walks over the to edge of the brook and when she can hold her hand above it, quickly turns it over to let all the sand fall in the water.

Looking at here hand to see if there are some particles left on her hand she sighs

"Thanks for the warning Vladimir. I clearly have to make sure to keep my head with fieldwork like this"

Satisfied there aren't any particles on her hand she rubs the remaining sand of while walking to her donkey once more and after rummaging some more she takes out a new looking wooden box the size of about 6 wine bottles and takes it to a clear flat place at the forest edge of the beach. Then she opens the lid revealing padding at the insidde. And a latch holding the 2 parts of the front panel together. She releases it and swings the doors, that even include the sides, open to reveal more padding holding vials, glasses, some lenses and some other tools. She looks back at the others, especially Vladimir

"This should be useful right?"

She takes a set of gloves that she dons right away, a petri dish, pincers and a little spoon and walks over to the floodline again to take a sample of the strange particles

"Shall we work together to analyse the particles Vladimir? We should find out something with our combined knowledge and equipment"

And she walks back very careful not to spill anything to her equipment and sits down.

As she looks back when leaving the beach Tyranael sees captain Satlin says goodbye and goodluck with an informal salute not bothering to speak through the science babble as Vladimir and Meinozsé start making their plan.

She follows what looks like an animal trail along the river, which is a bit strange considering the total lack of animal life in the valey as far as you have seen. There aren't any actual tracks on it, it's a just passable path among the shrubbery.

She walks for a while, now and then the trial cuts a bend but she can regularly look at the brook but doesn't notice any change in the concentration of particles.

After three quarters of an hour the ground starts to slope upwards and the mountain range seems closer by, the growth becomes slightly less dense, but still she has the trial to follow along the brook, which has become wider and shallower on this rocky ground.

Then, an hour away from the others a clearing shows up ahead, as she closes in she sees a pristine pool from which the brook originates.

At the far end from among some rocks is a spring that feeds the pool and when looking into the pool an enormous amount of plants can be seen in the clear water. But also still the particles.

A number of similar trails as the one Tyranael used lead to the pool, some from the forest, a couple come from uphill where the growth quickly lessens.

As she looks around the attention is drawn back to the pool where the plants sway in the quiet pool, and still the forest is stuck in the eerie quiet only marred by the wind among the leaves.

The unnatural quiet of the forest concerns Tyranael greatly. She is incredibly on edge as she follows the brook and finally reaches the small pool. To her relief, but also somewhat to her dismay, she notes that here it is just as quiet as everywhere. She looks at the trails that lead to the pool. Given the number of them and the fact that they were there and not overgrown should indicate the presence of animals. Yet no animal could be so preternaturally silent as to make no sound whatsoever.

Then she turned her eyes toward the plants in and around the water and it became clear. The plant growth was too dense for such a small pool. Which meant that the particles that were present here in the water still had enough effect to transform the animals into the plants here. Maybe the lower concentration caused them to be smaller plants and not trees. But they were definitely still plants. Yet, Tyra wanted to have some more proof of this theory.

She sat cross-legged at the edge of the water and closed her eyes. Then she concentrated on her faith and tried to use it to expand her mental awareness outward over the pool, hoping to detect minds within the plants around her. She had never tried anything like this before and she had no clue if her gift would even work on minds with only rudimentary intelligence. But, a mind was a mind, or so she thought.

Vladimir does exactly what Meinoszé asks him, trapping the particle between the pieces of glass isn't that difficult, because small for Meinoszé is not really al that small for Vladi.
While working he turns to Lepus: "what are you writing? About the tree soldiers or about your amazing sand magic? I am really impressed you know, I'm not kidding! By the time Vladimir has captured a particle between glass Meinozsé has build her microscope. It doesn't look very stable, a minimalistic frame holds up the leather tube with lenses and offers the two restpoints to put the glass on so it should be visible through the tube. A mirror lies under it to reflect a lightsource if that is needed for contrast.

Vladimir's comment about his mother makes her look up to him. "Your mother's a scientist as well? What is her area of expertise?"

Lepus' pessimistic grumbling makes her giggle a little bit
"As long as we are careful with our actions and think them through and our protectors stay vigilant" She looks a moment to the Captain who keeps an eye on them, gives an acknowledging nod and then looks into the forest again "we should be save. So don't worry to much, otherwise you'll have Vladimir all over you trying to smoothen your wrinkles. "

"Thank you Vladimir" as she takes the glass and carefully places it on the microscope.
As she starts to look through the microscope you see a her mouth slowly drop open as a look of awe appears.
"I.. it.. it's beautiful! And even more then I expected! It looks like a gemstone prison! Each point of the dodecahedron looks like an other tiny gem"
She moves aside to let the rest look as well
"This will be interesting to see what's inside this structure though"

When the first plants start to grab her legs Tyranael gets a feeling somethings presence, it feels like a strange and angry presence. It's like it blames her for something. Then an other feeling trickles in, it's a feeling of cold wet restriction on the legs...

The moment she returns her awareness back to normal the plants suddenly shoot forward to grapple as the those already around the legs start to drag Tyranael into the pond.

Reflexively in response to the plants leaping at her to grapple her, Tyra tries to crawl backward. Although the plants around her feet prevent her from going too far back, she draws one of her swords and starts hacking at the plants, first the plants that are threatening to constrict her and secondly the plants around her feet. She isn't entirely sure why the plants would be angry with her, but that barely matters to her right now.

As she grabs for her sword the plants seem to be ready for that and grab that arm and pull her into the water turning the situation from bad to dire as she start to go down already halfpacked in plants leaving only one arm and a head unaffected, yet, into water with particles suspected of turning people into trees....

With as elaborate movement as she is capable of given the situation, she tries to summon the power of the sun God into her.
"The fire of the sun, I call upon thee now to give me power. Fire Nova!" and she tries to unleash a searing blast of fire from herself as hot and as large as she can muster.

Even though Tyranael tries to resist the pull, she soon vanishes in the tangling green mass and then underwater leaving nothing except her tracks leading to some dragmarks.

For some moments it is quiet as the water calms down again and what waterplants can be seen are just quiet.

But then a tine smoky bubble surfaces, quickly followed by a whole trail of bubbles.
Then much deeper then you would expect a pool like this to be a light can be seen that quickly grows while big boiling bubbles burst out of the water forming a plume of steam!

Then all of a sudden there is a huge bang blowing water, singed plants and ground in all directions leaving just a white glowing armour with Tyranael in it stationary in the centre.

Then things start falling down all over the area.
When the first daze of the explosion vanishes Tyranael finds herself at the bottom of a deep pit in the centre of a crater. Still a plume of steam drifts off above and two waterfalls come down, one from either side. Some splatters hitting the armour come to a sizzling end on the still hot armour.
Surprisingly enough Tyranael doesn't feel to bad from the explosion. but there was no water to break her fall as she hit the pile of rubble that used the be the pools bottom.

Around her the pile slopes downwards here and there revealing three tunnels from which the sound of running water can be heard.

Taking a moment to steady herself, Tyranael inspects the destruction she's wrought. This was unlike anything she'd ever done before. Although she was somewhat pleased with herself for causing such a big explosion, she couldn't help but think this was not entirely her own work. Well, she'd managed what she wanted to. She looked at the three tunnels that had been revealed by the destruction, wondering where they would lead to. This might be interesting enough to follow for a moment. But she wasn't about to explore some tunnels all by herself.

She inspected herself for a moment. Apparently the blast had not left her completely unaffected. Her armour was blackened and still fuming hot, causing steam to rise up wherever the water hit her. Underneath the links in the chainmail it seemed that her underclothing was singed, though reasonably intact. Her Ralri tabbard was all but destroyed by the flames, only blacked tatters hung over her shoulders. With a sigh, she removed even these, gingerly taking care not to touch the chainmail beneath, since that burned her fingers. Her trousers were likewise burned, leaving her lower legs exposed and sooty, although her boots had miraculously survived. A quick feel on her head showed that her hair had survived as well, although it stood on end in places and was a general mess. And of course, there was soot everywhere.

Well, no matter. What mattered now is that she got out of this crater and back to the party. She inspected the rough wall and saw plenty of handholds in the newly created surface. She looked where the water was coming from and deliberately stayed away from it. The last thing she needed now was to steam in her own armour. She picked her way up carefully, taking care to avoid loose rubble and testing each handhold carefully before pulling herself up further. Still, she slipped several times and it took her quite a while to pick a decent path. Eventually though, she crawled out onto the edge of the pool, which now looked decidedly barren. She got to her feet and started walking backwards along the trail she had followed earlier.

When Lepus answers his questions he listens with a smile and says: "of course you'll make it! You seem te be quite good at protecting yourself and the king won't put you in a stew, even in tolv-countries it's illegal to eat cunnicul. Besides, he would not have asked, or summoned, you for this mission if he didn't think you were special somehow and he is very lenient towards his special people. I have experienced that many times. And don't worry about me telling anyone about what you can do, every superhero needs secret superpowers don't they?" The smile grew to a huge laugh during the last sentence.

Meinoszé's question about his mother gives his eye a special pink glow: "I'm not sure if my mum would call herself a scientist, but she is a doctor, though she'd probable tell you she's a midwife, specialised in tiny species. She helps large species aswell, but her size gives her trouble, obviously. She's much more than a midwife, she's an obstetrician, a GP, a surgeon and a diagnostic. Her work inspired me to do my work. And besides all that she is a terrific mum and fantastic person. It's not in her area of expertise but I think she would have solved this problem by now. Unfortunately she doesn't like leaving the mydum anymore.."

He hands Meinoszé the specimen and watches how she places it under the microscope. When Meinoszé describes what she sees he askes: "a gemstone prison? How do you know? Could it really be? That many of them, all in the water, changing who ever drinks it into trees? That doesn't seem plausible. Let me see!" He flies up to look through te microscope and is amazed and speechless about how beautiful it is.

"Of course, if we don't find anything we can't be sure of anything, it could be that we just don't see it or that she has just put these fascinating things in the water in similar concentrations as the particals as an indicator."

With Vladimirs help the two of them soon manage to catch a flea alive.
One holding it carefully, the other failing with tweezers to grab a particle, but with a little pipette that succeeds and when they are about to give up on making the flee swallow the particle as it keeps falling back in the petri dish above which they try. But then they see it go into the flee and tense moments of anticipation await, but nothing obvious seems to happen and eventually they lock the flea in a petri dish to keep an eye on it if there are any slower effects.

"We might be able to dissolve the dodecahedron with hydrochloric acid. If the magic works when the water is swallowed I suppose the dodecahedron falls apart in the stomach. I don't think fleas have gastric juices, that might be why it doesn't work. I should have payed attention when my teacher was telling about insect anatomy, but it never seemed useful before."

"That would be an interesting test to see if it survives the stomach indeed. And unless before it got trapped in the dodecahedron it was absorbed before reaching the stomach the particle should be able to withstand the acid. And then we have to hope it is still visible..."
She suddenly looks worried at Vladimir
"You do have the acid in one of the vials right? Or do you still need to gather it from a stomach?"

ooc: As this is taking to long I discussed with Bootie/Vladi to wrap this up. Can't get Vereleus/Tyra to used to not having to post

ic:
It might be the pain that jolts Vladimirs mind but he remembers a set of contrast substances that should be somewhere in his pack that could be used to mark the particle once it is freed. As he dives off with an exclamation to get it Meinozsé has to ask him what he came up with.

Then together they indeed manage to dissolve the dodecahedron but the marking process turns the acid in kinds of pretty colours, but the particle stays hidden.

Stuck again for a moment Vladimir starts to pace up and down clearly thinking and then taking a note from below the vials of marking fluids. With an 'aha!' he drops the note and starts dissolving the next particle leaving Meinozsé to read the note and see that it mentions about certain things counteracting each other without visible effects.

This time Vladimir manages to give the particle a subtle, still transparent light blue colour. He then asks Meinozsé to start catching to next flea and give him some room as now some precision work will come. He sucks the particle up with a pipette and starts moving it quickly up or down and then looking where if it's position changes, but whatever he tries, it seems to be stuck in place.

Then he sucks up some additional water and then tries to loose as much fluid as possible without loosing the particle, and after a few rounds of this he asks Meinozsé to hold the flea just above a Petri dish. Not that it mattered much, it still seemed to be to acid as the flea dissolves a bit and dies.

With a sigh they start over the process, it's not like they have time pressure with Tyranael still being away for almost an hour now.

The strangest thing happens this time, as Vladimir adds the contrast fluids, two particles become visible! and you are sure you only added one dodecahedron. So either there were two in there. Or not all are encapsulated...

Still wanting to know the answer he takes both particles and this time rinses them a lot more to be sure they won't melt the next flea.

As they are forcing the particles into the flea Satlin suddenly seems to start shouting something but that gets lost in the noise of a big BANG and a violent earthquake like tremor!!

Above the trees upstream the brook, the direction Tyranael went, you see a steam rolling outwards forming a mushroom cloud.

As you look around to the equipment it doesn't seem any hasn't survived, but the last flee and particles got lost, the dishes containing the guinea fleas have fallen open. In the one the flee that got the dodecahedron fed was is a dead flee, and in the other you only see a shrivelled leave.

Broadening the survey of the surroundings it stands out that the beach seems to be longer, the water isn't coming to the 'flood line' formed by dodecahedron's any more.

Then it hits. The water if flowing in the wrong direction......

Lepus' outburst gave Vladi a whole new respect for the cunnicul, he considers him 'one of the good guys' now, some one who could become a friend. "I liked that pointy-eared comment seeing as the fleas are probable the only ones in our party without pointy ears."
Vladimir didn't really have an opinion about Satlin before but he decides that liking Lepus means not liking Satlin. "Sir how dare you call some one from the kings staff a 'dumb animal'! And what are you if not hired help? I'm quite certain I could survive on my own here, but why would I try? You are here with orders to help us. We travelled a long way with ms. I doubt one cunnicul magic-user that's never been here before has anything to do with this curse, and as you probable know, there aren't many other cunnicul magic-users.
And I'm wondering what our bloody tolv is doing aswell, explosions are usually not a good sign, maybe we should go and see". Looks around. "Let's see if we can save anything of our experiments and go see what Tyra is doing, she might need help".

Meinozsé paled slightly at the outburst between Satlin and Lepus. And wouldn't they been look at each other they would have noticed her visibly swallowing a comment as she decided to stay out of this one and she had started to recover what was left of their experiment.
Now Vladimirs attention is turning to that she looks at him with worry.
"There is nothing to save. The last fleas and materials are lost. We have on dead flea in a Petri dish, giving only more questions about what he died from. It could be the insertion procedure, the dodecahedron encapsulation or still the particle inside the encapsulation."
She takes a deep breath
"Then our second dish now contains a shrivelled leaf, but it was open so it could have fallen into it and the flea escaped, or it is the flea... which is still very alarming considering the extra particle we discovered before."
It's clear this aren't the results she had been hoping for, rather what she had been fearing.
"Let's pack these used tools carefully and quickly and see what happened to Tyranael"
As she is already closing a vial that had been left open and miraculously had remained standing during the tremor. Emptying all tools and packing hers carefully wrapped to avoid contamination into her box she is soon ready to move on after helping Vladimir if he wasn't ready before her already.

Satlin seems to have decided to keep the rest of his anger inside and instead turn his attention back to watching the surroundings and especially the dissipating cloud in Tyranaels direction.
While the others pack he walks already a bit in that direction, giving each his donkey back to it's own care and as soon as it seems everybody is ready he abruptly turns and starts on the trail expecting the others to follow him which Meinozsé does without much comment besides shaking her head slightly.

About half an hour after Tyranael started walking back along the trail she hears movement ahead.

Hearing movement, Tyra expects the worst, since the rest should still be half an hour away. Of course it was possible that they were going her way, but she wasn't about to take any chances. Taking her remaining sword (she would have to look for the other one when they went back, if it didn't melt into a puddle of iron), she sneaks into the bushes adjacent to the trail as silently as she can, which is somewhat less now the clinking of her chainmail isn't padded by her outer clothes and remains still there, keeping her eyes intently on the road.

Noticing it was Satlin, Tyra sheathes her sword and walks towards him.
"Just the hired help? What are you..." she looks at his expression towards Lepus and decides she probably doesn't want to know.
"I'm not entirely sure what happened though. I was at the source of this stream and there were plants that tried to drag me into the water, proving that this water is unsafe to drink, especially combined with the fact that the forest is empty. I then tried to cast a fire nova just large enough to free me of the plants dragging me and I... exploded. Well, I assume that's what happened because I blacked out and when I woke up the entire lake bed was drying up because of a rather large hole blasted in it and my equipment was in... well, this state," she indicated herself, "thankfully the magic protected me from personal injury. Although I do believe I've massacred a lot of forest creatures. But the explosion did reveal a set of tunnels that used to be below the lake bottom. Perhaps those are worth exploring and I decided to come get you to do so."

"See the positive of it, in a tunnel system are probably no other plants that can be cover for mutants to hide between. We'll be fine"

Looking thoughtful she starts walking.
"We did some experiments with fleas found on the donkeys. How they reacted to the ingestion of whole particles and those with the dodecahedron removed. We didn't see much results, but when we were trying to make a flea ingest the dodecahedron the tremor ended the experiment. We did notice some changes afterwards but can't be sure what caused it. The flea that got the dodecahedron died, possibly due to the insertion, or the dodecahedron or the tremor. A second dish had shrivelled leaf where before was a flea that died from the acid used to solve the dodecahedron, but the tremor had opened it. The third try with less acid failed due to the tremor. The only interesting thing we did find was that we tried to contrast the particle in the fluid and when Vladimir managed to do that we found on one occasion two particles while we opened only a single dodecahedron. So either there are also still free particles, or there can be more then one in the dodecahedron. We at least can't drink water without dodecahedron's without trying to put the contrast fluid in it, and we don't have enough for that."
